Shut the box has an interesting history. Apparently, it had its origins in France during the 12th Century. That puts shut the box even earlier than the first European mention of playing cards (Spain c. 1375 a.d.). Shut the box was a favorite with Norman and Channel Island sailors and fishermen who could win or lose a considerable sum of money over the course of an evening. In pubs even today, shut the box is a game played for money.
However, there is no need to have money staked on a game in order to enjoy the game. In fact, many have found shut the box to be a great way for young children to strengthen their basic math skills. This classic can now be a favorite in your home. Roll the die and flip the tiles to equal the dice roll. If you roll a 7 flip up a 7, or a 5 and a 2, or a 4, a 2, and a 1. Adults can play pub-style for the pot, or help the younger one's learn basic counting skills. This classic is also great as a solitaire game or played with the whole family. This quality, all-wood game includes box with flip tiles, 2 dice, and instructions for three versions of play. Game measures 8.5" x 5.5" and is for 1+ players.
